Why Your Social Media Isn’t Working (And How to Fix It)

Illustration representing troubleshooting why social media isn't working

“We post regularly and it’s just not working” is one of the most common things we hear from small business owners about social media. Almost always, the problem isn’t effort — it’s one of a handful of specific, fixable issues. Here’s how to diagnose which one is actually holding your account back.

First, define what “not working” actually means

Before troubleshooting, get specific about the symptom, because the fix is different depending on which one applies:

  • Nobody sees the posts (low reach, flat impressions)
  • People see it but don’t engage (views without likes, comments or shares)
  • People engage but it doesn’t turn into enquiries (a following that doesn’t convert)
  • It used to work and has recently dropped off

Each of these points to a different cause.

Symptom 1: Low reach

This usually comes down to one of three things:

Posting content that looks like an ad

Platforms generally suppress reach on content that reads as promotional over content that reads as genuinely useful or interesting — a pattern that’s held fairly consistently across Meta and TikTok’s public guidance to creators and businesses over the years. If every post is “we’re open,” “book now,” or a product shot with a price, that’s the most common single cause of flat reach.

Inconsistent posting

Long gaps between posts (weeks, not days) reset momentum each time. Our guide on realistic posting cadence covers what a sustainable, consistent schedule actually looks like.

No engagement in the first hour

The first 30–60 minutes after posting matters — replying to early comments and being active tends to help a post’s initial distribution. If posts go up and then get ignored by the business itself, that’s worth changing before anything else.

Symptom 2: Views without engagement

If people are seeing the content but scrolling past, the content itself is usually the issue, not the algorithm:

  • No hook. The first line of a caption or the first second of a video needs to earn attention — a generic opener gets scrolled past regardless of what follows.
  • Nothing to react to. A post needs to say something, show something, or ask something. A photo with no context or point of view rarely gets a reaction either way.
  • Wrong format for the platform. Content built for one platform and cross-posted unchanged everywhere else often underperforms — audiences on Instagram, TikTok, and LinkedIn respond to noticeably different styles and pacing.

Symptom 3: Engagement without enquiries

This is the most common complaint from business owners, and often the least understood. A few real causes:

The audience isn’t local

If your followers grew from broad appeal content, hashtag reach outside your service area, or a giveaway, you may have an engaged audience that simply isn’t in a position to buy from you. Our guide on growing a genuinely local audience covers how to avoid this from the start.

There’s no clear next step

If every post ends without a way to act — no link, no “message us,” no mention of how to book — people who are interested have nowhere to go. A CTA doesn’t need to be pushy, but it does need to exist somewhere consistently.

The profile itself doesn’t convert

Someone who gets curious from a post will check the profile before doing anything else. If the bio, link, and pinned content don’t make it obvious what you do, where you are, and how to contact you, interest dies at that step.

Symptom 4: It used to work and stopped

A sudden drop after a period of steady results is usually explained by one of:

  • A gap in posting (illness, busy season, holidays) that broke momentum
  • A shift toward more promotional content over a run of weeks
  • A platform algorithm change affecting a content type broadly (this happens periodically and is rarely specific to one account)
  • Increased local competition posting more consistently or more usefully than before

Reviewing your last three months of posts against the categories above, side by side with your engagement numbers, usually surfaces the actual cause faster than guessing.

What to check before concluding it doesn’t work at all

If you’ve genuinely ruled out the above — content is useful, posting is consistent, the profile converts, and the audience is local — it’s worth a fair, honest read on whether the channel itself is worth the effort for your specific business; our realistic ROI breakdown walks through how to measure that properly rather than guessing.

If it’s become clear the issue is capacity rather than strategy — you know what needs to happen but don’t have the time to do it consistently — that’s a different problem, and one we’ve covered in our guide on hiring in-house, freelance, or agency help.
