Local Business Directories: Which Ones Matter and Why

Madexify blog cover: Local Directories, Which Matter

If you run a local business, you have probably been contacted by someone offering to list you on “hundreds of directories” for a monthly fee. At the same time, you might have noticed that competitors appear on Yelp, True Local and industry websites. So do directory listings actually matter?

They can, but not in the way many sales pitches suggest. This guide explains which listings are worth your time, why consistency matters and how to avoid wasting money.

Why directory listings can help

  • Direct enquiries. Some customers search directly on directories or industry platforms, particularly for trades, health and hospitality.
  • Consistency and trust. When your business name, address and phone number appear consistently across the web, it reinforces that your business is real and established.
  • Relevant links. A listing on a respected industry or local website can send useful visitors and help people discover you.

Local listings support, but don’t replace, the foundations covered in our local SEO guide.

Start with the ones that matter most

1. Google Business Profile

For most local businesses, this is the most important listing by far. It appears in Google Search and Maps and is often the first thing customers see. See our step-by-step guide.

2. Apple Business Connect and Bing Places

These control how your business appears in Apple Maps and Bing. Both are free and worth claiming.

3. Social media profiles

Your Facebook, Instagram and LinkedIn profiles act as listings too. Keep details consistent with your website.

4. Industry and professional directories

Associations, licensing bodies, suppliers and industry platforms relevant to your field. These are often more valuable than general directories, because the audience is looking for your specific service.

5. Local sources

Local council business directories, chambers of commerce, business networks and community organisations you’re part of.

6. Major general directories

Well-known directories such as Yelp, True Local, Yellow Pages and hipages or similar platforms in your industry. Choose the ones your customers actually use.

Consistency matters more than quantity

The most useful thing you can do is make sure your core details are the same everywhere:

  • Business name, exactly as customers know it. Google’s guidelines say your name on your Business Profile should reflect your real-world business name, without added keywords.
  • Address, in the same format, or a clear service area if you don’t have a shopfront.
  • Phone number, ideally one main number used everywhere.
  • Website address.
  • Opening hours and categories.

If you have moved, changed your phone number or rebranded, update old listings. Outdated details confuse customers. See brand refresh or rebrand for more on changes.

Be careful with paid listing packages

Be wary of services that promise hundreds of listings or guaranteed rankings. Many of those directories get little real traffic, and some low-quality ones can do more harm than good. Before paying for a listing, ask:

  • Does this directory rank in Google for searches my customers use?
  • Would my customers actually use it?
  • Can I claim and edit the listing myself?
  • What happens to the listing if I stop paying?

Our guide to comparing local SEO quotes covers other questions to ask providers.

Make each listing complete

  • A clear description of your services, written for customers.
  • Real photos of your work and premises.
  • Correct categories and service areas.
  • A link to the most relevant page on your website.

Reviews on directories matter too. See how to get more reviews the right way.

Keep a simple record

Keep a spreadsheet of every listing, with its web address, login details and the date you last checked it. Review it once or twice a year.
